Aa is for “Alphabet Soup!” Having so much fun strengthening our fine motor muscles with squeezing, pouring, scooping, and measuring. And of course, learning about letters!

Due to the snow day on Friday, we celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday today. We read "The Cat in the Hat" and then decorated our own hats for the cat. It was so much fun! We love to read!
Today we began writing in our "PreK Journals." Every week we are going to write about a new topic. Today we reviewed Mat Man and practiced drawing a person. We learned that we can add details to our pictures to make them more exciting.
We practiced writing about our pictures. We know that we need to write about what is in our picture, so the writing makes sense. We listened to the sounds in words, and then wrote the letters that we heard. We did a fantastic job!! Ask your child about how we use crayons for coloring, and pencils for writing :) To encourage writing at home with your child: -After they draw a picture, ask them to write about it. -Encourage any form of writing (scribbles, shapes, letter-like shapes, and/or letters). -Even if the letter they are writing is not in the word, encourage them to write it. Any time they are writing letters, they are practicing and LEARNING :) Beginning the process of learning how to write is an exciting time for prekindergarten students, but it can also be challenging and cause frustration. It's important to encourage any type of writing that young children are doing, so they begin to love it! PreK registration for 2018-19 is now open! Parents and guardians may contact the main office with any questions.
Today we had Valentines themed math stations. We can find particular shapes in a group, count objects, and match numerals.
Today we learned how to write M. We learned that letter M is a “frog jump letter.” This means that after the first line, we have to pick up our crayon and “jump” back to the top.
To write the letter M: 1. Start at Mr. Smiley. 2. Big line down. 3. Frog jump back to the top. 4. Big line slides down. 5. Big line slides up. 6. Big line down. We were shape detectives today. We learned that we look at the sides and corners of shapes to see if they match. We know that shapes can still match even if they are different sizes or colors!
PreK students have begun a phonological awareness program called Sounds Sensible. Students will be completing hands-on activities that focus on listening, rhyming, segmentation, and dictation.
